We wrote Slide on a rainy October day at the Dairy Studios, London. It’s hard to recall a time when uncertainty and fractured opinion hasn’t been on the news, but it was around the time of a big event that will remain unmentioned. We were frustrated by the way everything was framed to us via the media and in general - how events unfolded to leave us feeling powerless and confused. Making use of these emotions and turning them to song was an important moment; a combination of reacting to what’s happening and creating fantastical distraction from the harshness of reality has become a lynchpin in the approach to Volleyball as a project. It provides an outlet for us, a door away from the main room, not completely disconnected but somewhere grounding enough to reclaim perspective addled by fear-mongering and fake news. We hope to create a place where listeners can get the same experience.

ARTWORK

The artwork was a collaborative process. We started by collating moodboards and sketches, trying to find commonalities between our independent visions. The photo for the Slide art came from Rudi’s travels in Japan, Koya San and was one we have been trying to place for a while. We’re glad to have found a home for it.

We wanted to get a live video together during lockdown. Turns out, videos are harder than we first thought and we hit the steep learning-curve face first, via over-heating computers and cats eating the tape delay...
This video set the course for the majority of our lockdown lives as we embarked on making a bunch of similar videos while being Covid safe. The results will be yours to judge as we barf out the content from our digital stomachs onto your eyes, in due course.
